Elusive Single Point

Bug showed in Wrentham yesterday and today. Yesterday the major broke and Bug was RWD. He showed really well.

Today there were three dogs and I really thought Bug had a chance. He did not. He was dumped. He showed really well again. I asked the judge afterward what she liked and disliked about Bug. Basically she liked everything about him, the planes of his head, his shoulders, his front, but she thought he lacked substance. He is TOO skinny. Crap.

This is a real killer for me. I keep my dogs skinny anyway, but where he has been going to PT for an injury I haven't put that much weight on him. I have put some on, I feel like he is fat, but the judges do not. It looks like I need to put more weight on him in order to be successful and get this last single.

Drat! I really though this was going to be Bugs weekend. Last time I saw him he did look skinny, but good and happy. When is the next show?

It's a crying shame dogs have to be fat for the judges! The Labrador ring is particularly bad, the dogs almost jiggle as they walk.
I'd say I have the reverse issue, everyone in agility will tell you when your dog looks fat, esp. the masseuse and chiro people. Poor Wilson is always on a perpetual diet to lose that last pound.

I hope you have better luck next time.

Bummer. You would think lean would be better. Especially health wise.

I'm sure Bug will be happy to hear about his new windfall in the food department!

I showed Sam at a svelte 38 lbs - his handler would have liked him heavier but we were also doing agility so I was keenly aware of his weight. However, Sam was also considerably older so he had more presence and maturity to him. That last point will happen, don't worry. If you need to put a little weight on Bug, just make sure it is muscle and look for a breeder judge - they will understand and appreciate that he's in awesome condition.

So frustrating, esp with all you do to keep Bug fit and healthy. I think show dogs should look lean and fit!

It is a shame that almost all confirmation dogs are too fat to do real work without putting themselves at risk of injury! Even working breeds, it just is crazy!

I am sorry. I so much prefer to see a lean working dog than a fat one. Darn it all.

That is so frustrating about the weight! Especially with all of the PT you've been doing to get him healthy. Hoping you can get that last single soon.

Maybe you could find a trial where Bug was the only Corgi? (don't know if he would get an automatic point or not) Or just pay off the others handlers to not groom their dogs. :P
