You do realize that if extremist animal rights activists had their way, dogs as companion animals would basically cease to exist because all animals would be altered and therefore reproduction would not be possible, except for cloning I suppose. And the books this site has on their 'recommended reading page' many are from the guy who is heavily involved in PETA which has a nasty habbit of actively killing dogs/other companion and show creatures under the guise of "dead is better than this!"
I'm all for animal rights, but extremists in ANY area be it religeon, science, animal rights, etc aren't good for anyone in the long run.
Oh , I know. I don't think Karen Dawn is that much of an extremist - she typically doesn't attempt to evangelicize animal rights - she is respectful of people that aren't "hardcore."
Dawnwatch is more a barometer of what is currently being written in today's media and what is on television. She has pitbulls and isn't anti-companion animal (although for all I know she is anti-performance dog). She is a little wacky in that she promotes a veggie diet for dogs (which I think is wrong, being a vegetarian myself)!
In general though, Dawnwatch provides a link to articles of interest regarding all animal welfare including those that are raised purely to be slaughtered without the PETA like self-rightiousness.
By the way, HBO is currently showing a documentary on Ingrid Newark which I would love to see as she is a bit insane!
Ike is the first dog that is purely my own. We have overcome some big hurdles with his fear of people (how can you avoid them!) and continue to work on building our confidence in the sport of agility. Ike takes life at a much slower speed than I do, which is a challenge. My goal for our partnership is to figure out a sport or joint activity that Ike and I can enjoy equally and excel at together. This would be in addition to Ike's #1 sport, lounging on the couch; which I don't really enjoy or excel at.
Carmen
Silvermist Goes to the Opera NAC-V NCC OJC-V TN-O TG-N HP-N, CL1 CL2-H CL2-F
Carmen is a 9 yo salt-n-pepper Miniature Schnauzer from the same breeder as Ike. I started working with Carmen in the winter of '08 after my DH told me we could not get another dog until the end of 2008 (enter Bug 5/08). Little did I know how much joy she would take in agility and what a spitfire she would be. We are having a ton of fun working together. Unfortunately, Carmen was diagnosed with PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) in 10/08 and has been retired as her vision continues to change.
Bug (Honor)
CH Visions Cornerstone Dream On (CGC) TN-N
Bug (fka Honor) is a 5 year old CWC. He is a blue merle with tan points, a LOVELY temperament and a great work ethic. He finished his AKC championship 7/3/2010. Bug is looking forward to playing in Rally Obedience and tracking/Noseworks.

I should have started the comment above, "Oh, I agree" - rather than "Oh, I know."
I though you were rather 'in the middle', and figured you were all up to snuff on this stuff, but just thought I'd mention it in case.
Thank you. It's a good conversation to have! I am all for more information.
That cartoon is HILARIOUS!!
